Content ?

I was a bit dubious about the first post of DNAjobs.com being advertising but I thought I'd let it go. Second time around I'm convinced.

This post offers no new content for discussion and seems to be advertising. If you agree please leave a comment to that effect and I'll delete any future postings. Otherwise give me some justification why this post should remain on the site, this is a university hosted site so therefore advertising free.

Agree

Agree with all this. I would like to see the content of DNAjobs.com (particularly if it includes jobs outside the US...) but as an RSS feed, not as a weekly post.

Jobs outside the US

Neil,

DNAjobs.com currently has jobs posted from Canada, Singapore, the UK, and India; however, the large majority are from the US. DNAjobs.com welcomes anyone from any country to post legitimate employment opportunities. Hopefully, as the "word gets out", more international listings will take place.

Regards,
Jason

Ditto

Rss feed would be most appropriate, I think.

My Apologies

I apologize if I used this site inappropriately. I thought there might be an interest in jobs available for biotech professionals. I even linked to Nodalpoint.org from the DNAjobs.com website in an attempt to direct DNAjobs.com's own customers to Nodalpoint because I thought Nodalpoint was a very useful resource. Anyway, again my apologies. I will not post here anymore.

Regards,
Jason

Open for discussion

I don't really have a set of guidelines for posting content on the site so whether or not posting job listings is "advertising" or "inappropriate" is open for debate. I'm just raising the issue for others to discuss.

My rule of thumb is simply: Does this provide potentially interesting content for dicussion ? While job listings for the life sciences are relevant they do not in my oppinion provide a topic of dicussion. My second concern is that the site is hosted on my lab's servers (property of the university) and part of the policy of hosting pages is no advertising.

While the probability is low, I'd hate to get the site taken down for a breach of hosting rules :)

One suggestion: Provide an RSS feed of your job listings. This might be a more appropriate means of distributing the information ?

Discussion

Greg,

I agree that we should not post anything that might jeopardise your permission to use your university's server.

I do not know whether it makes a difference in Nodalpoint's situation or not, but DNAjobs.com's employment services are free. (There is no charge for posting jobs.) Consequently, many universities and government organizations post jobs and post-doc positions on the site. Since the jobs are posted for free, does disseminating information about them constitute "advertising"?

I will happily comply with whatever your decision is.

Regarding our RSS feed, it is: http://radio.weblogs.com/0117458/rss.xml

The feed includes posts to DNAjobs.com and DNAblog.com, thus the feed includes biotech news, commentary, and employment opportunities.

By the way, DNAjobs.com's link to Nodalpoint can be found at:

Compromise

I have incorporated the DNAjobs.com RSS feed into the left side bar of the page. A specifc feed of "just jobs" would be nicer though :)

Just one thing...

I'd just like to point out that if any of the jobs from the RSS feed (sorry, I'm yet to have a look at it) strike people's attention and inspire discussion, they can 'blog it' and possibly promote it that way.

left bar

...is a good compromise, and potentially more accessible? Good idea.

RSS Feed

Greg,

Thank you for the RSS Feed. I will modify the feed so that it starts listing individual job posts rather than just the once weekly "Jobs of the Week" newsletter format. I am unable to separate out the news, but I will emphasize the jobs.

I really do like your idea of forming a collective bioinformatics blog. The collaborative nature of bionformatics combined with geographically dispersed databases and research facilities makes the blog format potentially very effective for forming a productive community.

With your permission, I would like to include a link to Nodalpoint in tne next DNAjobs.com "Jobs of the Week" newsletter. The newsletter has a large subscription base. Doing so will increase your blog's exposure and hopefully contribute to further growth of Nodalpoint.

Regards,
Jason
