The Life Science Identifier (LSID) specification is a proposal for uniform identification and retrieval of life science data. The current lack of a uniform system is an obstacle to automating high-throughput processing techniques such as genomic computational annotation and sequence array analysis.

Not a lot going on there yet is there. Worth keeping an eye on though. Someone should also write a utility for tracking dead sourceforge projects ;-)
This new year, I find myself wondering if there will ever be use of common, accepted standards in life science informatics. The concept seems based on a notion that data providers will never change. Who knows if we will even be using the web as we know it in 10, 20, 30 years time?
