Science magazine and online has a special feature on Mathematics in Biology, in which the interface between these two disciplines is reexamined. I'm particularly impressed by William Bialek and David Botstein's article, in which they argue for a common core education for all science degrees, to replace the hitherto "soft" biology approach.

That is a good article and too important to be restricted to Science subscribers. I'm providing it at this site, until such time as they sue me for breach of copyright.
Seems obvious to me that rather than specialist undergrad bioinformatics courses, what we need are more computer/mathematical/physics-literate biologists. And jobs for them to go to. But then I guess that raises practical issues like the requirement to find and pay suitably qualified teaching staff.
