Galaxy in Windows

Galaxy will run in Windows with a little bit of effort. Take a look at http://g2.trac.bx.psu.edu/wiki/GalaxyInWindows for some advice.

Reinvention...

Indeed, An admission of guilt! Meant as a joke of course. Every speaker up there committed several of the "sins" to various extents. We all do. Just need to be better at understanding when it is right to do so, when the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. Unfortunately, while there are existing (often open source) tools for many use cases, rarely have they really been designed with extension in mind. Which means it is easier (and generates a much better final product) to start from scratch. Of course, if you then don't learn the lesson and design for reuse, *that* is a major sin.

Besides, I could just as easily have said "revolutionize" instead of "reinvent".

Reinventing the wheel is

Reinventing the wheel is fine -- provided the reinventing isn't done out of ignorance, but with a good understanding of the existing wheels :-)

I only caught the last 10-15

I only caught the last 10-15 minutes of the talk, and one of the sins mentioned was don't reinvent the wheel. Ironically the next speaker, James Taylor admitted that Galaxy was reinventing web based data integration for bioinformatics :) On a general note, I don't have a problem anymore with reinventing the wheel, it is the mission of academia to explore solutions to the same problem from many different perspectives.

Carole is giving a talk on the seven deadly sins of bioinformatics. Should be interesting and provocative... I'm not there this year, so keep us posted!
