Reinvention...

Indeed, An admission of guilt! Meant as a joke of course. Every speaker up there committed several of the "sins" to various extents. We all do. Just need to be better at understanding when it is right to do so, when the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. Unfortunately, while there are existing (often open source) tools for many use cases, rarely have they really been designed with extension in mind. Which means it is easier (and generates a much better final product) to start from scratch. Of course, if you then don't learn the lesson and design for reuse, *that* is a major sin.

Besides, I could just as easily have said "revolutionize" instead of "reinvent".

Reinventing the wheel is

Reinventing the wheel is fine -- provided the reinventing isn't done out of ignorance, but with a good understanding of the existing wheels :-)

I only caught the last 10-15

I only caught the last 10-15 minutes of the talk, and one of the sins mentioned was don't reinvent the wheel. Ironically the next speaker, James Taylor admitted that Galaxy was reinventing web based data integration for bioinformatics :) On a general note, I don't have a problem anymore with reinventing the wheel, it is the mission of academia to explore solutions to the same problem from many different perspectives.

Carole is giving a talk on the seven deadly sins of bioinformatics. Should be interesting and provocative... I'm not there this year, so keep us posted!

Greetings from Vienna

Greetings from Vienna ISMB 2007, the weather is nice and our tribe is out in force for the two day SIGs. I'm currently sitting in on BOSC waiting to hear about the latest AJAX genome browser developments. I don't plan to 'live-blog' any of the talks, instead I will keep notes and post some of the highlights at the end of the day.

If any nodalpoint readers attending ISMB would like to meet up for a beer drop me a note at greg[dot]tyrelle[at]gmail[dot]com.
