I think the Nature round-up was interesting, not least because they cited my blog in the non-scientists' science blogs. But, the point about ranking and rating is that they asked Technorati to pull out the top science blogs based on Technorati rank. As far as I can tell this is an even more ephemeral measure of worth than Google Pagerank, based as it is on the number of sites/blogs that are linking to a particular blog and some mystery factor, factored in over a given 60-day period. I'm sure that mystery factor is there simply to obfuscate the real ranking method in the mistaken belief that black hatters won't be able to manipulate it easily.

Yes, tags wasn't the word I was looking for, but it's the one that came out early this morning before sufficient caffeine :)

I don't think the ranking has anything to do with tags (Technorati or otherwise). It's more to do with the number of inbound links, and perhaps the rank of those inbound links (like PageRank) as well.

To be fair, the list title is "50 popular science blogs" rather than top 50 and the article points out that blog ranking is subjective. I don't rate use of Technorati tags very highly at all as a rank measure. But then, what's better? I know from my own server log that traffic is an equally bad measure, with the many hits from crawlers, bots and so on.

That said - yay! The Nodal founders and community can be justly pleased and proud. A few weeks ago I found a blog post describing Nodalpoint as "the grandaddy of bioinformatics blogs" (or something to that effect), which made me (a) smile and (b) realise just how long we've been at this.

A list of the top 50 science blogs is on Nature's news site, as part of an article by Declan Butler highlighting the best science writing. We didn't get to interview, but we are proudly there at #46...
