(via Nascent) The official announcement of the upcoming Science Foo Camp is up at Nascent blog. A foo camp is a kind of self-organizing event where the program is built literally in wiki style. I don't know exactly why, but I get to go to Googleplex to hear an amazing group of people talk about their work and brainstorm some ideas that we have discussed here several times. Having seen the list of people attending and some of the expected/proposed discussions some of the things that will probably be on the agenda are unique authors IDs, open science (or science2.0), online science communities (like Synaptic Leap and OpenWetWare), data visualization and data management.
I will blog the event here in Nodalpoint but there will likely be tons of coverage on several other blogs. Probably the best way to track it will be to follow the Connotea tag scifoo

Is anyone else from nodalpoint going ? Speaking for myself, no. The web site clearly states that this is an exclusive, invite only event. Since I didn't get an invite... :)
O'Reilly have had a lot of push back over their Foo Camps. The general feeling is that an invite only, closed event that discusses open source, open science is somewhat ironic...
In response members of the tech community created BarCamp, an open version of FooCamp. More background on this little storm-in-a-teacup can be found here, here, here and here. Tim O'Reilly's response to all this.
Personally, the invite only aspect is not such a big deal, O'Reilly are free to invite who they like, but the irony will not be missed by the scientific community. Nonetheless, well done Pedro for being recognised as one of the leaders in thinking about Science 2.0, I look forward to the coverage (esp. regarding open science, online publishing) and maybe finding out what goes on in the googleplex :)

Well done Pedro - I understand it's quite a recognition to be invited to one of these. I'd like to see what ideas people have for actually implementing open science (as opposed to theorising about how it would be a great idea).

Foo camps are not self-organizing
FOO stands for Friends Of O'reilly, the book publisher. FOO camps are invite-only, and O'Reilly keeps pretty quiet about who is there and what is discussed. Participants often write-up their experiences, but the event is for all purposes a closed event.
